As recently mentioned I tried installing some of my "Gartland" roof vents on my Reading roofs I made last year. Since I had the milling machine I thought this would be the way to go. All new toys must be played with even though I have owned this one for about 6 years!
The Reading had various vent configurations. The first up I chose was for 6 vents. The layout might be a bit of a fudge with them being right across from each other. The next layout I want to do is going to be pretty time consuming. It is for 16 vents. They are staggered on each side of the car and are not even equidistant to each other. Ugh! I did a layout drawing in Solidworks to translate a RMC HO drawing to S Scale for the centerline of the vents. I did the partial arc of the roof and "plug" that fits in the car. The RMC drawing showed a 7'-4" face to face on the width of the vents. If you have digital calipers scratch a line at .505 from the edge of the roof to get the longitudinal centerline. On the good side the vents fit pretty well with only very minor cleanup. It is not noticeable in the casting but I did put a radial undercut to help the vent fit the curvature of the roof. As soon as I have a fresh bottle of black paint going I will paint this roof. More later.
