A trick someone mentioned that has worked for me (I used it for the
highly-detailed SRR decals for Jim King's low-side gondolas) was to take a
felt-tip marker and ink the backing paper. Dark color, of course.

There is an O Scale FM flat with 5 containers that required about 20 pieces of
decal per container! I have done 2 of them so far. They were white decals on
white decal paper that were included with the car. The importer did not grasp
that like the cars each container needed a different number so the sheet was
FULL of the same container number further adding to the fun. I wanted to add
that the S container decals really ARE S Scale. I really fought with John to
make that happen. I thought that there might be a bait and switcheroo because
in this case the decals are truly incrementally bigger than HO but they are S
Scale. He has not broke even on the investment yet……
