Folks, chattanooga has been a rail center since creation in the mid 1850s and
played a significant role in the Civil war. The Southern Railway (NS) has a
major yard and shop there (Google DeButts yard). There are several bridges that
pass over the yard and shop area with good viewing areas.
There is also the Tennessee Valley Rail Museum that offers tourist rides and
tours (and an occassional ride on their turntable.) There is stored equipment
on the grounds available for inspection and the NS mainline passing within
yards of the Museum building --- yes there is active railroading and rail
fanning in Chattanooga.
