Thanks to all who replied.  I received an off list suggestion from Bill Winans 
who suggested fitting metal tubing compression ring around the shaft end of the 
collar.  That warmed the cockles of this chisler's heart and had the side 
benefit of instant gratification.  And it worked...

... Only to find that this new acquisition had a hitch while in motion.  Take 
it apart again to look for a problem with one of the gears.  Sure enough one 
the gears on an axle has a crack in it.  This will require a new wheel set.
