Your last sentence pretty well sums things up - those who want to continue to run American Flyer use AC and Hi-rail. Most "scale" modelers choose DC and code 110 wheels. A subset use DC and Hi-rail wheel and track standards, I would only consider that if you are interested in running some of the newer AF steam which doesn't come with scale wheels, but is otherwise pretty good as a model.
