I just got back from the SHS open house. In previous years it was over 2
days so I never saw the total attendance. It was only 1 day this year with
pretty amazing attendance given all working folks had to take the day off
for it. The sales were brisk to say the least. I got there are about 10:15.
The line waiting never dropped past 5 people at the checkout for well over 2
hours. Poor Robin didn't get a break even to eat. BIG boxes were being taken
away by all.

I thought this was all good but was a bit sad as this is almost definitely
the last such even there. We all have had a lot of good times at SHS
ironically even though it is an office and warehouse. The barbeque became
the warm up for those going to the NASG convention as well..

My spending budget for the day was quite small but I did manage a few things
including a new boxcar. (Click on "new photos" from the home page) The
boxcar is quite rare for a few reasons. 1) It is a NYC car - not a lot of
them around here. 2) It is 1 of a very few cars that have test shots of the
very rare prototypical SHS draft gear.

Back in the day when RRM came out with the USRA 2 bay hoppers I followed a
few photos from Kent Singer and made some killer brass draft gear to fit
them - old school long before I ever heard about Solidworks - machining
brass parts to make the master pattern. Here is 1 of my cars.

When Don saw the draft gear he asked for me to draw up what I made. He got a
few test pieces made so there was a mold made at 1 point! Why the draft did
not make it beyond that into full production runs I do not remember now. But
I am glad I have this car with the draft gear. If I could get an email
address for someone "connected' in MTH I would gladly send photos of my cars
with draft gear including my new boxcar for inspiration.

All in all a good day seeing my S brethren. I will not be at the NASG
convention this year so my next appurtenance will be the CJSS Get Together -
hopefully there will be one.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
