Hi Ed;

Sergent made a device called the "Brakeman", IIRC, that would ride on the car 
or locomotive pilot as you positioned a car on a out of reach siding and hold 
the coupler unlocked.

Of course many modelers clip the trip pins on Kadee couplers (see the end shot 
of my MILW car posted earlier). Those will not uncouple beyond reach either.
