Peter, Your welcome to purchase some of the standing MTH figures that I have, or better yet you paint the sitting people for me and keep the standing people.

A second thought it something the financial people talk about--dollar cost averaging. Each month you put a few dollars into people and at the end of the year you've now populated your entire station area. I know the problem with laying down your credit card with Don Heimberger and walking away with this tiny bag of lead people and a paper receipt. Also too often I've already purchased the figure already but it hasn't found it's way on the layout, so it seems new to me--Don counts on me doing that!

Interesting question, Bill.

For me it is definitely affordable figures. I loved the box of 100 figures in N-scale made by Preiser. Sure, having to paint them is time-consuming, but the cost savings is worth it. You can paint them fairly quickly while they are still on the sprue. The figures we currently have in S-scale are nice, but somewhat limited in their "purpose", and at $5-6 each (painted or not), it sure starts adding up. Some of us were discussing this issue at the train show this weekend. I'm about to continue to scratchbuild my passenger station and I'd like to have 10 or so people waiting for the next train. That's $50-60! Ouch!
