The printed car side guy is about as bad as the hopper car load guy (thankfully
now gone) but no where near as bad as the "BEST oil for..." guy in my opinion.
He does clog up the listings and makes it difficult to spot the "real" vintage
cardstock sides.
Before his listings got completely out of control, I ordered a set just to see
what they were like. Cost me a couple of bucks. They are OK. Modern printing
methods on reasonably heavy stock. I don't find them nearly as nice as the old
Champion/Cleveland sides etc. from the 30's/40's. The combination of heavier
stock and embossed details make the old stuff the winner in my book.
With a little time and effort you can make a beautiful car from paper sides and
you'll never be able to tell the difference as it rolls by on the layout. In
fact I far prefer good paper sides to the later metal screen printed ones any
day. Go ahead and order a set, make the bane of many eBay categories $2 richer
and have some fun. Think of it like a puzzle. How do you make this simple
paper side into a realistic looking car?
