Thanks. I have read about your great modeling. Maybe even have seen
photos. I hope you are coming to the NASG.

HI Earl

I did not mean to over simplify things. My main message was for the
wheels which are not hard as long as you order for the specific engine as
mentioned on another post in answer to this issue. Couplers are another deal
entirely but the answers are out there or rather here on the list for
specific engines. Ron at AM also answers questions about his engines specific
scale coupler needs.

Howard, I like reading what you reported. But isn't it a little more
complicated than that?

You mentioned being careful in aligning the fittings. But are all the
fittings the same?

Also, I have found that adding scale couplers to FP7s that were delivered
with high rail can be a nightmare. Not for all of them but for some of
them. The truck frames on some of the highrail units were different from the
truck frames on the scale units. I do not have them with me right now to
look at, so I apologize that I cannot spell out the problem in detail.

Some of my diesels have fittings for scale couplers but Kadee or SHS
Kadee-style couplers do not fit them. I know there is some kind of a coupler
pad and maybe the fittings are for the coupler pad rather than the Kadee
couplers themselves.

I finally got so frustrated that I sent the units to a professional who
was able to make the conversions.

Let me qualify my comments. My AM diesels are limited to FP7s, FAs/FBs,
and E8s.

I have converted several AM engines to and from scale for buyers as well
as myself. It is no problem to get a set of diesel engine wheelsets from AM
to do so. It is a simple matter of unscrewing the frames holding the sets
in place and changing the wheelsets being careful to align the fittings.
Also, they can provide the couplers too. The same ease of conversion is
true for their other rolling stock.

Howdy,

Has anyone bought a Hi-Rail version of an American Models diesel and
converted it to scale? What all is involved?

I'm thinking of buying some American Models equipment for my kids to start
out and the letting them convert it to scale when they get older and want
to run it on Dad's layout...
