It's been a while since I posted anything about the "Q" so thought I'd add to
the usual FNF series. Over the past couple of months, in snatches of a couple
of hours or nights here and there and on Saturday, I've managed to nearly the
complete the small transfer yard at the base of the "Chicago" skyline. I
scratchbuilt a small scale house from CB&Q plans over a couple of nights and
now have an additional operating job to perform.
The latest addition is the arrival Thursday of the Old Chicago Post Office
structure which I contracted with Custom Model Railroad to build. Many pictures
of Chicago from the 50s and 60s showed CB&Q dinkies and famous named-trains
emerging from the bowels of Chicago Union Station and the Post Office, as will
occur on my layout. The tunnel connects to my 8-track coach yard in the former
"wine room." Still need to add stone and concrete foundations on the wood base
of the structure. Two picture which I'll post in the Photos section show an
E-8 lashup just blasting out with the 12-car California Zephyr while an F3AB
waits on an inbound track to the right. The size of this structure is massive
(42x30x3)and was really the only large structure I still needed to capture the
sense of the Chicago Q scene. Still haven't figured out how to connect the
S-Scale road with the HO scenery in the background, but that will wait for now.
Lots of travel and a family reunion in a couple of weeks means I won't get much
more time on it until mid-August, but then it's almost modeling season again
here in the hot and parched upper Midwest.
Saw Brother Zieska a couple of days ago and he had a nifty little Soo Line tool
shed he built that is highly detailed inside and out, and I hope he'll post a
picture, too.
Keep 'em rolling!
