Ed & All,
Just after I clicked send for my first email I remembered about the "ACC" issue. These models are ___ years old and owned by unknown numbers of people. It is truly the worst if you get a brand new model that has been glued together. But either way the end result is the same. Fixing them correctly can be very difficult. In getting a model prepped I go around it wiggling a bit for loose parts. Air hose valves as an item are usually the worst. Previous owners are infamous for using ACC fir repairs and looking at the model you will never know it especially if it is painted. Once the smoke of burning ACC hits and stings your eyes you know you are "in for it". That solder joint is now contaminated. There is no amount of solder or flux going to help you now until all the ACC is burned out, removed and clean brass is found in the joint where you need it most. I had a handrail stanchion on a S Scale NWSL J&L tank car that was "a little loose". I was just going to hit it with a little solder - make it better. I did into know there was massive amounts of ACC holding it together. 3 hours+ later I had to make a new matching handrail stanchion because the base burned off trying to fix it. All fun n games kids!
