As many of you know, the NMRA held its annual convention in Grand Rapids, MI
this past week. As is their practice, on the weekend following the convention
they hold a National Train Show (NTS) where vendors of model railroading
products of all scales show their wares. Clubs also bring modular or display
layouts and the whole affair is open to the public. Our local S club, the
Southeastern Michigan S Gaugers (SMSG), spent the better part of the last year
significantly upgrading our 13'x36' portable display layout. The improvements
included complete rescenicing and the addition of 37 new structures.

We entered the layout for judging in the "Modules by a Group" category and are
thrilled to report that we earned the First Place Award. Over the course of
the 2 1/2 days we had the chance to demonstrate the beauty of S as a modeling
scale side by side with layouts of all scales. We answered questions and
passed out material directing folks to the internet for more information on S,
the NASG and the S SIG. It was a major investment of time and money for the
SMSG, of course, but we think we did S proud by sharing our layout with the
hundreds who came by to look and talk...and we took home the gold to boot!

Two photos of the layout have been accepted by MODEL RAILROADER for use in
their Trackside Photos section and a feature article on the layout is being
prepared for DISPATCH. Perhaps other clubs can make use of some of what we
learned during this process.
