Gents…

The message I get from all of this is that if you are a “runner” who likes to run off-da-shelf trains, there will be lots of confusion about how to have one common control system for all brands and types of locos. I do not envy those folks.

On the other hand, if you are a “modeler” who likes to modify, change, create, rework and improve those off-da-shelf trains, you do not have a major problem. All the motors are basically DC. So if all the electronic innards are removed, the bare motor will run on DC or DCC. Even Gilbert’s old AF, with a universal (DC or AC) motor, can be made to run on DC or DCC (some rewiring required). The MTH and LIONEL locos are reported to already work on DCC now or will be in the near future.

So what’s the problem? Just go buy a DCC system and enjoy what it offers. DCC can operate any DC motor if you are willing to modify the locos when necessary. Still, the whole thing reminds me of the Tower of Babble.
