There's a key phrase in you post, Brooks.  You fine tuned your AM turnouts for 
SHS/AM.  

I won't disagree that Lionel's Flyer flanges will cut pizza better than AM's or 
SHS's and could be improved upon.

However, the Lionel steam runs fine on unmodified SHS or AM turnouts, which is 
what most folks would have.
