  Hi, Do you want to build hand laid track or are you working with flextrack?  
I've seen excellent results from both methods. The techniques used for HO or O 
scale will also work for S scale so don't limit your searches to just S 
articles. For neglected track I think the ballast is the most distinctive 
feature as it usually gets a lot of soil mixed in with it along with some weeds 
at times. Also want more rust and less greasy look as there are fewer trains 
running over it.Simulated rail joints at 39 foot intervals also adds a nice 
touch. You can start a photo album in the photos section to post your test
