You mean version 3.5 to version 4.0? The wrap of the decoders have changed over time and the new wrap is a clear plastic and is usually marked with the decoder type IE 4 for 4.0 and S for Select. The older 3.5 decoders did not have the markings. I do not have one of each in front of me to tell you the other differences.
If you do use a 100ohm speaker on an 4.0 that is not an issue, except the sound volume will be very low. Now using an 8ohm speaker on a 3.5 is not good and could blow the output amp.
