Simple answer... it was built like the prototype to transfer loads
from flats and gons to trucks. Neither are tall in O scale.

Doubt you need pillars for S Scale since the clearance from the top of
the rail to the bottom of the beams is about 20 scale feet. Granted, it
cannot be used as a run-through for tri-level autoracks, but it is not
intended for that.
