Being that the Walther's Proto-Max are HO couplers, how well do they perform
with KD 802/808 or KD #5 and how do they compare in size? The Proto-Max 6000
are for freight cars. Has anyone used the others in the 6000 series with
diesels or passenger cars in S scale? Thank you.

Dave:

The part number for the standard coupler is;

Standard Type 4 Pair (Enough for 4 Cars)
Walthers Part # 920-6001, p. 239 Walthers 2012 HO Scale Reference
HO scale, $6.98, currently in stock at Walthers

They are corrently shown as on sale @ $3.98 for four pair. I have been using
them (and the short shank variation) for several years. I have usually had to
ream the center mounting holes with a 2-56 clearance drill for 2-56 machine
screws, although I suppose 1-72 screws would work if the holes in Ace
conversions would hold a 1-72 thread. I've never tried that.

Also, the coupler boxes are too wide for the side mounting holes to line up
with the alignment bosses on Ace conversions. I usually remove these flush with
the coupler mounting surface.
