To through some light on MTH and Lionel sound and smoke systems.
Both systems allow you to turn off any feature or all features.
They also allow one to select the sound volume of individual sounds
and the volume of smoke emitted from the loco. So if you don't
want smoke you can turn it off. You think the cuff is to loud, turn
it down, to soft, turn it up. Can't stand cab chatter, turn it off.
I would think that since these features are controllable on MTH and
Lionel O gauge now, there is no reason to believe they will not be
the same on MTH's S gauge line. Am not familiar with Lionel's
S systems but would be surprised if it is any different from their
  O gauge.

As an aside, I have an O gauge shelf layout above my S layout. Most
of the engines are MTH. When I first bought my Alco FA-FB-FA set I
was playing around with the smoke volume. Turned it up to MAX to see
what she'd do. A couple of minutes pasted, and my then live in girl
friend, comes running down to the train room yelling, "I smell
smoke !" I told her yes the Alco's were running. Go back upstairs
its alright. So I still run the Alco's but now on medium smoke and
she's moved out ! So life is good, with smoke.
