I have one Lionel U33c running on my layout that has sound and works with DCC.
It is a pilot model and not yet available to consumers. It has Lionel sound --
no Tsunami. I need to return it to Lionel some day. I will eventually have a
NYC SD70 -- I hope.

> Do all sounds work in DC operation?

The engine I have does not work in DC and was not designed with DC capability.
Rich knows more about the DC than I do.

> Tell us how you can take it out of the box and run it as is?

I take off the lid of the box. Slide out the foam insert. Remove the loco.
Place on track. Turn on the DCC system. Pick up the cab and select the loco
number. Move the throttle up a few steps. Watch it move.

For $50 it should work. Anything a consumer buys should work regardless of the
price.

Someone who wants it. Try eBay or a Yahoo Group. If it is a Lionel product,
it has a warranty. They will fix it for you. Free!

The Lionel catalog 'splains what they hope to do in the future. Most of the
future talk is based on what the catalog says. Or some of the dealer
newsletters. Occasionally a brief email from the Lionel Customer Service
answers a question. What Lionel offers now can be determined via conversation
with a Lionel retail dealer. Try Doug Peck.

What did you want to know that Lionel cannot answwer for you?

> I asked for help 3 months ago and no one showed me how to do it.

What do you want help doing? Have you asked Lionel? What exactly was the
question. My memory stops at about 72 hours. I am right up there with John
Armstrong. Actually, his memory goes farther back than mine.

> I gave up.

What did you give up? Eating meat during Lent? Why not explain the problem so
that we can understand it. Maybe somebody can help.

Have you spoken with AM about this? I didn't know AM had automatic coupling.
Their scale couplers are plastic dummy couplers. The assumption is you will
install Kadee couplers or something equivalent.

AM scale steam engines come with smoke, but are DC locos out of the box. To
make the smoke turn on using DCC, you'd have to rewire things so that the smoke
unit works from the DCC decoder's function output. If the smoke unit's current
draw exceeds the function output rating, then a relay needs to be installed to
solve that issue. It is possible, but needs some wiring work.

Have fun! Let us know how it all works out. Sounds interesting.

> Now how can we add another sound unit for talking?

Probably best to ask the guy who wants to sell you the sound unit. AM locos
come with sound already, but it might not be DCC controllable (guess).

> AM has scale wheels and is set up for DC operation already.

That is true. Has been that way for decades.

Have you informed Mike of that? He might like to know.

Keep up the good work.......Ed L.
