Bruce, No, I do not wish to argue either. I have assembled one riveted box car with the rolling pin ends. Of course, I did not follow the directions from LW. I made the innerstructure from basswood including using a Northeastern basswood notched roof. Then I cut rectangular panels from styrene and used Plastistruc T-strips of proper size.
I did retain the LW underbody details but used Grandt Line AB brake components rather than those included in the kit. I still have an unbuilt DS car with sides far too high for any known DS car including the Cotton Belt rebuilds. I have to decide how much I will cut down those sides for a DS car of prototypical height. I guess LW cranked out some single-sheathed outside braced sides as well, but I've never seen them. For a time--and perhaps still--Scenery Unlimited was clearing out its last stash of LW box car kits at a very low price. Mr. Heimburger may still have some to offer. Frankly, I enjoy trying to improve---a bold verb for me--old kits. Keep at it, Bruce. I have recently been using Loco Workshop 40' 10'6" AAR boxcar kits with upgrades to model some cars. Yea they are somewhat "rough". The sides are not too bad and the "rolling pin" Dreadnaught ends are acceptable (to me) since they are closer to prototype than any other ends. In fact one set of sides is becoming a 1932 AAR standard boxcar. Are they going to be contest winners? NOT! Are they going to represent the prototype cars I am wanting? Yep. Kits are not a thing of the future. Many many of us do not want to build them, consequently the market for them is not large. Even you guys that want modern models, would you put together a resin kit? How critical of the offerings would you be? Resin kits, unless made by Mr King are at times not as well detailed as many would have you believe. They do fill a void of a certain car tho. Look at me, just blabbing my head off. No more preaching. I'll go back to my corner and sit quietly. I do not want to start an argument! Bruced ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
