Both of the models were built to the older track and wheel standards. Sunset
did offer replacement wheel sets when they imported the Challenger that
conforms to the new NASG standards. For the Challenger they could be used to
upgrade the model with out spreading the drivers on the axle but they can't be
used for the Big Boy. The Big Boy uses a 60W-16 thread form on the crank pins
and the Challenger uses a 1.4 X 0.3 mm thread. The replacement drivers do not
come with crank pins. Both models use HO gear boxes in a high-low arrangement
and metal universal joints. The metal universals tend to rattle and bang. The
models have 3.0 mm diameter axles.
The models were designed to go around a tight radius. This is accomplished
by building in excessive side to side movement of the drivers in the frame. One
could add split washers to take up that play. I chose to make ring spacers that
were 0.040 inch thick. I pulled the drivers off the axles and added 2 to each
axle. This means my Big Boy and Challenger will no longer go around a 42 inch
radius.
Having an excess amount of later movement in the axles also induces a side
drift to the boiler after it has negotiated a curve. There are some postings
on the BrassLocoBuilders list about information regarding boiler centering to
correct this problem. Model Railroader had article series: Nov 1961-Apr 1962
that addresses this issue. If memory serves me correctly both models have
Pittman motors in them.
The models were not offered in a painted version from Sunset, Wayne Hills of
Marker Light Models did have decal sets available.
