Gents,  I stand corrected, or at least was partially correct regarding the 
"wooden" lateral supports supplied with the PRS kits. Had a conversation with 
Jerry Porter the other night and he told me they used specific drawings when 
designing their kits, namely SP and I believe Southern Rwy to determine the 
correct type of lateral running boards. Turns out the design as seen on the PRS 
kits with the support straps on the outside was indeed a later design used to 
make for a more secure corner grab mounting. This was a late production change 
prior to the change to steel running boards.
   Photos such as the one Pieter provided of the Jack Delano yard shot, seem to 
show mostly the oldest wood design. 
   So, I guess modeling either type is up to the modeler or what looks best to 
their eye.
    Personally, I prefer mostly steel rb's anyway where applicable.
