While a home layout does not have to use module standards S-Mod standards are 2 ¾ track centers. When entering a turn on a 2 track mainline the tracks typically would widen greater if it is a tighter turn. I struggled greatly with the 2 ¾ centers for a while when making my layout so decided to make everything 3 minimum. I have a B&O EM-1 with a big overhang even on 60 radius. I wanted to be completely sure there would never ever be a sideswipe issue so the 3 took care of that issue.
