Previous to the J1 most of the PRR steam locos had the Samhongsa free
rolling drive. It was a blessing because they run so amazingly well but a
curse because they can disengage and run away on a grade. A few years back a
burned considerable bran matter in trying to figure out how to disable the
free rolling drive without installing a new gearbox. This is what I came up
with. http://www.lanestrains.com/Samhongsa_Gearbox.jpg It worked very well.
But now since my layout is flat (was unknown at the time of the fix) I am
enabling the free rolling aspect again. I just switched back the last L1
today. The gears vary from locomotive to locomotive as to which are brass
and which are plastic.

Since my layout was not built yet, (I didn't even own the house at that
time!) I was concerned about stripping the gears and killing an otherwise
good locomotive. A few months before NWSL was sold to the current owner, and
its fate was still not known, Dan & I paid the set up fee had a small run of
the gears made up in brass & plastic. I sent a sample gear and they got done
in about 2 weeks. I don't know if NWSL made any extras at that time but if
you have a free rolling drive loco with issues NWSL may have some gears in
stock. Give them a call. I don't know the item numbers for them.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
