Keith & Jonathan,

By far the current weak link in using SHS flex track for complete scale use
is getting good turnouts - unless you are going to make them yourself using
Fast Tracks tools. I am not knocking Tom's turnouts, but decided before the
loose rail dried that was not where I was going.

I have 2 #8 crossovers made by Custom Trax. They were made to order for me.
Right out of the box they are very nice. I don't recall if I was asked if
they were for scale use only. I think I was asked. But they quickly became
very troublesome because of the frogs. Even code 110 wheels could span
rails and make literally flashing shorts. A surprising number of locos
actually stalled on them because there was almost an inch of urethane frog
and no real rail. I have a write up of the fix at the bottom of my page
here. http://www.lanestrains.com/My_Layout_Page_2.htm If you are getting
Custom Trax turnouts made you should use the Protocraft frogs. Norm will
sell them separately. With the solid cast frog they are great turnouts.
Protocraft does not have #6 though for the SHS sized rail, and are not going
to make them either. I asked.

I am currently getting 2 very custom #8 curved crossovers made using SHS
rail and the Protocraft turnout kits. It took John a year to "get it right"
but he did. I will report on them whenever they get installed.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
