Matt... Bob McCarthy's doors consist of multi-layered laser cut wood stock. The raised portion of the Superior door is a peal & stick piece that you apply to a wood door base. The concept allows the builder to add the other details (latch, hangers, etc.) as needed/wanted and keeps the cost lower. Grandt Line makes styrene door detail parts and I use their On3 parts for S standard gauge. After assembly I seal the wood with sanding sealer, add the styrene and metal details and then paint the car.
FYI, I'm just finishing up a beta test of the soon to be released Supply Car NP 10' IH 40 foot Box car (1923-25). I built a beta test 8' IH car (1915) earlier. They are really pretty "trick" kits in the way they go together. The radial roof and fish belly under-frame assemblies are especially cool. The basic kit includes a full interior. Basically, you get all of the wood parts to build the car body and then you add the level of details (grabs, ladders, brake sets, etc.) that you want. On the 10' IH Box, the 7/8 Murphy steel ends are fabricated just like the doors. Laser cut individual ribs are provided on peal & stick material that one applies to a base end piece that has laser cut lines to indicate their position. Add Archer rivet decals and it looks as good as any white metal end, if there really were one made (NOT). Hope that helps.
