I don't use consists either on my railroad, but that's because diesels are for the most part too modern for me and steam locomotives had separate crews. If I run a double header, I use two engineers. I've done it that way since my pre-DCC, Dynatrol days.
Part of the problem is that there is more than one way to make a consist, using the consist address in the decoders, having the command station keep track of the consists and the basic all the same address. Dave Heine
