Hi Brian --

I have a book that shows the BAR ACF sliding door version was built in 1954
(~42 feet with 8 foot doors – 40’6” IL). I remember seeing them on Donner
Pass (we vacationed at Donner lake) before steam was gone from the SP, but off
the pass, so that had to be in the 1954-6 time frame. As Ed Koz. said, you
remember those cars! While it didn’t show did a build date, I found another
photo of the New Haven version with the plug door and heater -- in use for
paper loading at the time of the photo. I also found a photo of a BAR 50’
PS-1 without the tabbed sill built in 1965 (the caption says it’s 63’5”, but
that doesn’t jive with its looks or the 9 foot door, so I think it is really
53’5”).

Does anyone know when the 40' cars were first put into service?
