I suspect the main source for the finer grinding of model paint pigments was
a Floquil booklet "Painting Miniatures" which stated such. After all, they
wanted to sell their paint instead of using ordinary hardware store paint.
This book was copyrighted in 1961 and I have a copy of the 25th printing
(December, 1975). I probably bought my copy in 1976 for the marked price of
$1.75 and around that same time, my first airbrush. The book did include a
paint chip card for Floquil colors at the time. Painting technology and
regulations on hydrocarbons have greatly changed since it was written.

For me to strip a factory painted brass model painted with automotive paint
and repaint it with "model" paint would not be an improvement. Automotive
paint isn't the same as it was fifty years ago either.
