SHABBONA RR has been revising and upgrading some of its operating practices to
conform to the times and keep operating interest elevated.
Among the movements receiving scrutiny is the solid block meat trains out of
southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. The inbound crews yard the trains, and a
yard engine delivers them to KUD in one piece. Before this, the yard engine
goes to the enginehouse and MU's with an extra unit so as to have sufficient
power to deliver the train. The yard engine puts the inbound caboose on the
scale track, then goes to the other end of the train and shoves it to KUD.
Since these trains run on a schedule of sorts so empties and loads exchange at
Mooar Yard, only a short time passes before a train of empty reefers shows up
at KUD. The yard engine shoves the caboose to KUD and couples onto the outbound
train and pulls it back into the yard for inspection before it heads West. That
done, the locomotives tie on, the air brakes are tested, and the train leaves
town.

Other progress, the new GML throttle is working well, and a branch throttle
plug is being installed at Terminal District so the throttle can serve at
either location. The RIX throttle, as previously reported mysteriously came
back to life, but is running hot and will get another potentiometer soon. In
the meantime Throttle #1, the two #3 yard throttles, and the GML are carrying
the mail. A Varipulse 3-Amp handheld throttle is on order. and wiring for it is
being installed at the same time as the GML throttle is being brought up to
speed.

The dispatcher's panel at Mt. Zion remains on the 'roundtuit' list
