Hi Robert;

The SMMW GP-38 is due out this year. Since it is still in design and
development, I suggest contacting Jim King from the SMMW site and asking about
the fuel tank options.

The alternative if you want to "roll your own" from AM parts would be either
working out the details yourself, or looking at model railroad literature from
the 1970s or early 1980s before the Roco and Athearn GP-38 models became
available. At that point there were some folks who made GP-38s from the closest
available model, the Athearn GP-35

Sounds like the SMMW model is the way to go. Does it have various fuel tanks?

      Hi Bob

Assuming that you would want an accurate model of a 38-2 besides having to
lengthen the chassis and body shell of the GP35 etc the hood door arrangement
on the GP38-2 is different to the GP35 and would require extensive work to make
it into an accurate model.

I would agree with the suggestion of going for the SMMW version which if Jim's
previous efforts are anything to go by will be very very nice indeed.
