My curves vary a bit on purpose but nominally the outside main is about 62". The inside main is 59" and the code 100 freight bypass is about 56". My #1 rule - **without exception** - for making this layout is anything I own WILL be capable running on every inch of track on the layout. The J1 is the decider of what the track has to be. So far so good. There is 1 short area on the crossover that looks tighter than the rest. The J1 magic number is 48". Judging a tighter area against what is otherwise 60ish inch radius does not have me greatly concerned right now.
I am impressed with Bill Winans' track work. I am impressed with Dick Karnes' track work. But they are not my layout. I was not trying to impress anyone else but was pretty impressed when I first saw it. It serves the purpose of needing a crossover in an area that cannot be straight on my layout. The next straight area is about 20 running feet away, where there are already crossovers in place. John Wickham made it. He made 3 other #6 turnouts so far for me using the SHS rail. I don't mind paying someone else to do something I see as a short time need and I will not have it invest the time to learn how to do it myself.
