My present layout is 36 to 48 inches high ( chair height) because of my
failing knees, standing a long time on concrete floors and mats doesnt help
the old body. My previous layout was 56 ½ inches high ( a number I worked
with for a long time on the RR) and sat on top of 4 drawer filing cabinets
in a small basement. Looking from a chair is eye level and standing you can
reach a lot of layout.
As for weather problems of expansion and contraction, inspect before running
just like the prototype does with extreme changes. Be proactive in all
phases of the hobby.
