Plywood should be fine. Wood expands a lot in width or thickness but not
much in length so the way to minimize expansion problems is to keep the wood
length aligned with the rails and keep the wood width aligned in ways it won't
affect the layout length. With proper wood orientation the length movement will
be within the range that can be accommodated by sliding rail joiners. If one
lives in an area with humidity swings the best way to assemble track is to not
solder the joiners but to just solder a feed wire to every section of rail.
Here in central Cali as Ed sez humidity is not usually a a problem so we can
solder most of our track joiners and still not get bumps.
As for track support I'd just go with the 1/2 inch plywood and keep the cross
grid spacing close enough to support it. Adding ceiling tiles just gives
another unknown to the expansion equation, so if you add them do some test
first to make sure they don't swell up like a soggy cake when they get wet?
