does anyone remember p.t. barnum's famous quote?
you have to remember, some one is making money at
these shows, big time, otherwise they wouldn't exist

OK, missed that, but it depends what you mean by "paid".
Fuel costs are paid, van hire if necessary, accommodation put on
(can be very basic, can be very nice) and breakfast included. Lunch
is provided during the show, and sometimes an evening meal is
provided, very occasionally (one show organiser, in my experience
of well over 100 shows over the years) you are provided with hot
food before setting off for home.
Expenses are paid, yes, but nothing else.
Most weekends I have ended up out of pocket, so being told I have
been "paid" for giving up a weekend with my family rings a bit
hollow...
Traders pay to attend, based on size of stand, and have to sort out
their own costs. Some of them are small one-man bands, and I wonder
how they can afford it.
