Micro Mart states that their "suitcase connectors" are "top-quality 3M
Scotchlok brand". This means that they are the good ones and not a
knock-off IDC (insulation displacement connector).

I've been using the 3M version of these on my current layout and have
several hundred in service with no problems. I bought mine from Mouser, and
I did splurge and get their crimping tool, but that is not necessary. The
3M instructions even state you can use other tools. I have several hundred
more to install, so in my case, buying the tool is amortized over a lot of
connectors.

There have been reports about problems with these, but I believe that these
are caused by either using cheap knock-offs or incorrect installation. One
common problem seems people want to a install a wire size or type that is
out of the design range for the particular connector they have or can get
cheap. 3M makes several different sizes to accommodate most situations, and
they all use the same tool.

I only solder on the top side of the railroad. I use the Scotchlok
connectors, terminal blocks, or another connector rated for what I need, for
wiring underneath. IMHO, the Scothchlok connectors really save wiring time
over other methods I have used in the past. I don't use rail joiners except
for hinges on points, so I would find out right away if a piece of rail
doesn't have a good feeder.

Subject: {S-Scale List} suitcase connectors

I will be starting to wire my new layout soon and I thought I'd get your
opinions on the "suitcase connectors" I saw in the Micro Mart book. These
are the kind that you clamp them with pliars on the bus wire and it connects
to the wire that goes over to the track. I could see arguments both pro and
con.
