I wouldn't be overly concerned about dual motors, despite what Bill is
saying think about all the joints that could cause problems in say a OMI
E unit. I my math is clear this morning you have 9 connections, so
whether you have one or two motors, it's the connections that cause the
problems. Now, one disadvantage of two motors is the additional
space--aka the Sunset GP's. The RR units have wisely sunk the motors
into the fuel tanks on my SD-9 so there's lots of room for electronic junk.
I don't know how many connections a vertical motor has but I suspect
there are less to worry about. Besides it's sort of like one leg
running a bit faster than the other--because your on tracks you won't be
running in circles!

In spite of multiple reports that the 2 vertical motor drives are
performing very well, I will always prefer 1 motor and driveshafts. No
2 motors will ever be perfectly synchronized. Since they are/will be
coming RTR with DCC that lessons my concerns for wiring it though.
I have 6 or so mid 90s Overland/RRM diesels that came with 2 small HO
motors not coupled together. I will swap that set up out for 1 center
motor and driveshafts. If the motors were tied together I might not be
as motivated to change it.
The one possible plus about the 2 motor drive would on an articulated,
if 1 drive could slip momentarily and have the sound unit pick up on
the slip. That would be interesting! Like it or not I have no choice.
That is the way it seems new locos are heading with 2 motors.
