Rich (or should I say Rusty) a very fine job. Very fair and thorough review. As my LHS owner once put it when the Lionel Standard line first appeared: "it's not your father's Lionel." So to is with the newer Flyer offerings -- they are not mine or my father's Flyer. Beginning with the Mikado, Lionel is slowly realizing that while yes there are still Flyer purists out there; Don with SHS and now hopefully MTH, Ron also with AM, and DPH too; all have shown that reasonably priced RTR S Scale trains are trains that can have scale fidelity yet can be toy's too. While my first train set was a 1953 AF Meteor freight set; it is the SHS and AM products and "new" Flyer steam that I most enjoy running and which draw great interest at train exhibits. The U33 and now the SD70 show what can be done by LIonel AF on the diesel side. They are getting there and I can't wait to see what MTH brings to the table (I mean layout/platform). Can detailed rolling stock be far behind? Don said yes and MTH seems to be saying yes. Maybe Lionel will say yes too. I haven't seen the cylindrical hoppers yet which may be the starting point for them.
End of spiel and I apologize if this may be off post. But, as much as I love operating and yes playing with trains, what ever can be done to show younger generations that S Scale can equate with railroading as they see and are aware of, the better for our scale and perpetuating operating model trains.
