I could not agree more!  I have held, I think, three open-houses for the 
Potomac Division of the NMRA, and I believe my layout will be on the tour in 
Fall 2013 for the NMRA regional convention.  Also, for that NMRA convention, my 
layout may be one of the layouts available for sign-up operating sessions 
during the convention.

These interactions with the NMRA are not only a great way to show off our 
scale, but I always come away with many good modeling tips and observations 
from the NMRA members -- we have way more in common with modelers in other 
scales than we sometimes think.  For example, at the November open house, one 
HO modeler was checking out my Shinohara turnouts that I have converted to be 
DCC-friendly -- he was excited to go back to his HO layout and try out the same 
techniques on his HO Shinohara turnouts!
