Peter,

Thanks for the encouraging numbers. Between the guys that Tom and Rusty know,
and the ones that I know, who are not included in the assumed numbers because
they are not members of NASG, NMRA or Yahoo, there must be thousands of us!
Maybe Lionel and MTH are on to something.

Subject: {S-Scale List} NASG Membership Make-up

Group,

The mathematician in me is making me itch to correct the numbers. I posted some
metrics a few days ago, and they were "edited" along the way. If you are an
NASG member you can sign up for access to the NASG web site's Membership
Directory, wherein there is a page that lists the general statistics of the
NASG membership. These numbers are automatically updated any time the NASG
database is updated.

With respect to "scale" modeling, we currently have 215 NASG members whom have
indicated that they are interested in STANDARD-GAUGE scale modeling ONLY and
nothing else. HOWEVER, there are 601 members who have expressed interest in
scale modeling total. For example, I checked off "Scale" and "Sn3" in my
membership application. I am therefore not counted among the 215 but rather
among the 601 members.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things these numbers are small, but 601 is three
times the number that has been floating around in recent e-mails.

There are currently 1,067 members in this Yahoo Groups mailing list, so I would
feel comfortable estimating that there are at least 1,000 people who are
strongly interested in modeling S in "scale". Then add to that the number of
people who are neither NASG members nor members of this mailing list, but yet
model in "scale" AND those people who happen to prefer rail heights that are
somewhat taller and prefer claw couplers, but otherwise have what would appear
to be a scale layout, and I suspect our numbers may be even larger (of course,
that is anyone's guess).

OK, and with that, I am going back to patching up some holes in my layout's
scenery that I had recently made to install push-buttons for controlling my
Tortoise switch machines... (actually, first I am off to a small local classic
car show...)

- Peter.
