The issue is with straight DC, which was unanticipated. As long as your pack
puts out a pure, flatline DC level, everything is fine.

The problem occurs with pulsed DC, which apparently most modern packs put out
nowadays. The electronics tries to interpret the pulses as a command control
signal.

The problem wasn't discovered until someone on OGR asked about running the Y3
on DC. (It does, by the way...) By then, the SD70's were in transit.

When I ran some experiments, an old GML Enterprises DC throttle(which is on my
layout) and an ancient MRC Controlmaster X worked fine.

A newer MRC 6200 gave problems as did a Bachmann power pack from an On30 set.
The locomotive runs only in reverse. In forward, it sits with lights, sound
and the horn blowing. Locomotive orientation or reversing the wires to the
track make no difference.

Lionel is aware of the problem and it IS being worked on.

As far as DCC goes, I know the Lionel DCC has been tested on Digitrax, NCE and
MRC Prodigy DCC units. I have the MRC Prodigy and have experienced no issues.

Someone even found out he could have a DCC source powering the rails and still
use his Legacy controller to control the locomotive.
