My biggest reason for using KD5's was that I was coming over from HO and
had a LOT of Kadee 5's available.

Rolling stock that will be used on the club layout get 802's.  Cars that I
have bought with 802's keep their 802's (for the meantime anyway).

There are a few instances where an HO Kadee works better - one place being
the pilot coupler on a E8 - an extended shank coupler gets clear of the
pilot.
