Hi Carey,
I suggest to use a cone wire brush in a dremel on the location that you plan to 
solder too. I would not spend time cleaning the intire model. Also clean the 
casting carefuly with the dremel brush. I also use purple Scotch Brites. 

Funny that I just read this email becuase I just got done cleaning the tender I 
have been working on. I first cleaned it with solvent to remove any flux using 
a stiff brush similar to a tooth brush. Then a supper duty rubbing compond to 
remove any discoloration with heavy paper towels. Then another solvent cleaning 
followed by Windex then solvent cleared to stop oxidation. I know it will be a 
while I get color on it since I am back on the loco.
