Since there are over 30 locos on my layout now (counting multiple diesels)
all that are DCC equipped, 3 power regions and 6 wireless handles all from
NCE, that is truly what I would call heavily invested. I fought going to DCC
for quite some time most for the cost at that time and what I thought was a
very complex Digitrax handle. It was 2 cone shaped knobs that must have done
1000 things each. For the record the attraction for me to NCE was the LARGE
handle that had buttons that did ONE thing most of the time.

The push to the dark side came when Bill Moore was a VERY early DCC adopter
- with sound units even - and would not let me run anything on his layout
that was not converted. So I had a nice layout in the making 15 minutes away
and my stuff was all stuck in the boxes. Nuff said. Let's do this thing.

Even with my first install I must have had some short. Early decoders were
**very prone** to dump their programming at the slightest short. I killed 7
locos worth of programming in 1 second flat!

Even if I were starting from DC today I think I would still go DCC. Once I
started getting video cameras, digital still cameras and camera flashes that
are battery hogs I have been "concerned" with running out of battery power
at very inopportune times. I always carried TONS of AA batteries and battery
packs. I am not going to do that with my trains.

Conversely I absolutely understand for the outdoor layout folks wanting
battery power. Keeping that track clean is like real work!

Bill Lane
