Rhett,

That must be what I am now. A model railroader. I just list my little brother
and he was into both "N" and "HO", but his home layout was "N". My "S" gauge
layout may go above his track plan. yes it is an oval layout with a large yard
area. He had a bunch of engines all DCC and cars. At our train shows he always
ran a 3 engine lead, some times 4 and at least 48 coal cars with a pusher
engine. I will not have room for that long of a train. There is something that
is missing in "S".  48 of the same type of car with all different numbers.
That's what I should do just  shelve all my S " whatever" and go "N" and have
everything I need and more. But I'm not.

Well, I'm not entirely sure I'm an "S scaler" now! I'm a model railroader, but
choice of scale depends on what I'm modeling.

I chose to model in S scale for the following reasons:

1. Good running SW-1 available.
2. Easy to get scale materials for scratchbuilding (for when the world ends
and no more model trains are available commercially)
3. Lack of selection (especially at LHS) curbs impulse buying.
4. Decent size/heft for when I get older.

Since embarking in this scale 7 years ago, I've moved 4 times and haven't built
an S scale layout yet. I've worked on two N scale layouts, which primarily
served to reinforce a decision to model in a larger scale.

However, two of my primary reasons for modeling in S have been eliminated
(referencing the numbers above): 1. Walthers re-released an SW-1 in HO scale
that's DCC-ready and 3. the need to purchase items when they're available in S
actually increases my impulse buying (backfire!). Also, my choice of prototype
to model is largely being dictated by what equipment is available, which is
something I don't particularly like.

To be fair, I will complete a 2' x 12' S scale switching layout before deciding
to go in another direction scale-wise. I just wish folks on this list were
talking more about what THEY were building than what the manufacturers are or
are not making. That would be helpful.

Having said all of this, if S had the market presence that HO does, I would
DEFINITELY be in S scale.
