I'm not Rusty either, but the square corner was the typical early treatment for 
all-steel box cars, where the side and end sheets were riveted to a simple 
angle piece to form the corner. The W-corner was a W-shaped section instead, so 
the end sheets wrapped around the corner in a larger arc to be riveted to the 
sides.
