Or you could spray paint decal sheet (or even bits of leftover decal if you are 
as cheap as I am) and cut it into strips.I've done it, it works.

    Steve who needs the side sill safety stripes!

    

    Although you can spend a long time searching Micro-Scale decal
    pages, you might be okay in just cutting your own.  Micro-Scale
    makes solid blocks of colors, so you can cut your own speciality
    widths of stripes.  With a bit of experimenting you could make a jig
    to cut many at one time if they are cut at an angle.

    

    I did full gold safety stripes on a S Scenery gas electric many
    years ago--lots of fun!
