In 1993 (Valley Forge) I squeaked in one layout even though I was management
and was expected to do management things. I remember seeing the 6" ring
binder of tours and layout stops thinking ***this is not going to go off
well***! There was SO many busses needed they contracted with many bus
brokers. IIRC there was 30 -50 busses out at any given time. Explaining
leapfrogging layout tours to a general every day tour bus driver was a
challenge. It all failed miserably almost in the first 4 minutes of the
convention and went straight downhill from there.

I was left for dead with about 10 others on the lawn of a layout owner's
home for over well 2 hours waiting for the bus to pick us up. The homeowners
LEFT to go to the convention! We were stuck with no shade in searing sun -
no water or lav facilities available. Of course I luckily had my special
convention management shirt on because I had something to do as soon as I
got back - on time - which I did not! I was expecting to get lynched on the
spot. I truly had some rude remarks made in my direction like I had some
control over the debacle. My friend was on a tour later that the bus got
stuck in a neighborhood street. The bus turned to go up a steep hill and
buried the front bumper in the street!

There was so many bus problems the NMRA sued all the bus companies!

Bill Lane
